RESOURCE PHYSICAL SCIENCE- INTEGRATED

This class is designed to meet California High School Standards in chemistry, physics and earth science. The physical science program is designed to introduce students to scientific principles using laboratory experiments and the scientific method.  Lab techniques, data collection and drawing conclusions from experimentation are stressed.  This class will be modified and accommodated to meet the individual needs of the students.  This class is only available by recommendation of the student’s IEP team. This class does not meet the UC/CSU “a-g” requirements.

Grade: 9                               Year

BIOLOGY

Prerequisite: Completion of a year of Physical Science – Integrated

This college preparatory class is designed to meet California High School Standards for biology.  Basic biological concepts are studied: ecology, taxonomy, genetics, evolution, and cell theory and function.  Laboratory experience is used to enhance these concepts.

Grades: 9,10                       Year                       UC/CSU

Grade: 10                             Year

BIOTECHNOLOGY

Prerequisite:  Grade of a C or better in both Biology, 9th grade science and successful completion of Integrated Math I

This is a laboratory based class where students explore the advances in biotechnology that are rapidly shaping the fields of medicine, agriculture, evolution and forensics.  This course would pick up where the sophomore biology curriculum leaves off. Students can earn credits from Solano Community College by passing the end of the course exam. Students will be taught how to work in a laboratory setting and expected to show professionalism of a lab technician.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU

AP BIOLOGY

Prerequisite:  Completion of first year Biology with a B or better.  Completion of a year of Chemistry recommended.

This course is for students who have a desire to learn more about Biology.  Major topics include cell theory, heredity, evolution, organisms and ecology.  All students enrolled in AP Biology are prepared to take the AP exam. Summer project required.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU                                                Material Fee:  Lab Manual

PHYSIOLOGY

Prerequisite: Completion of Biology with a B- or better and successful completion or concurrent enrollment in Chemistry.

This is a college preparatory course that deals extensively with human physiology through lecture and laboratory experiences.  Cellular reactions, histology, the transmission of neuromuscular contractions, and homeostatic mechanisms are just some of the topics covered.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU

OCEANOGRAPHY

Prerequisites:  Completion of Integrated Math 1, Physical Science & Biology. Science grades should b C’s, unless the student receives approval of the oceanography teacher.

Oceanography helps teach critical thinking, application of algebra, and scientific writing using topics related to the ocean. The content includes investigation into the physical, geological, and chemical properties of the ocean, as well the diversity of life.  Important environmental science topics such as climate change, pollution and sustainability will also be addressed.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU

CHEMISTRY

Prerequisite:  Completion or concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 and successful completion of Physical Science and Biology with a C or better.

This course uses a lecture/lab approach to teach the fundamental concepts of the chemical nature of matter.  Areas of study include atomic structure, chemical bonding, the mole concept, reaction rate and equilibrium, acids and bases and oxidation-reduction.  Strong math skills are essential.

Grades: 10,11,12                                Year                       UC/CSU

AP ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Prerequisites: Completion of Physical Science, Biology and Integrated Math 1 with B’s or better and at least concurrent enrollment in Chemistry.

Students will understand the interrelationships of the natural world, identify and analyze environmental problems, and examine alternative solutions for resolving and/or preventing environmental problems.  APES is a lab science including chemistry, physics, geology, biology, and geography.  It also incorporates a sociological and political perspective.  Summer Project Required

Grade: 11,12                        Year                       UC/CSU

CHEMISTRY HONORS

Prerequisite: Completion of Algebra 2 , concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 Honors or permission of the instructor required for enrollment. “B” or higher in Biology and/or Integrated Physical Science

This course is a more rigorous first year chemistry course than general chemistry, and topics will be covered in greater depth and with a greater emphasis on mathematics. Students completing this course will be well prepared to take AP chemistry.

Grades: 10,11,12                                Year                       UC/CSU

AP CHEMISTRY

Prerequisite: “B” or better in Chemistry (Honors chemistry strongly recommended).

The college- level course is designed to prepare students to take the AP Exam in chemistry.  The topics covered in the first year chemistry class will be studied in greater depth and using higher levels of mathematics. This course has a strong lab component and some labs will require a 2 hour (double period) commitment.  Students will need to be available for a zero period to complete these labs (the class is offered first period).   Summer project required.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU

PHYSICS

Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chemistry and/or Physiology and concurrent enrollment in Algebra 2 or higher, or instructor’s consent.

This course is a lecture/discussion college-prep class.  It is taught from a conceptual or descriptive level with mathematics and labs used to illustrate concepts. Some major areas of study are mechanics, heat, sound and astrophysics.

Grades: 11,12                      Year                       UC/CSU
