Drama and Dance Courses
DRAMA 1

This course covers acting and improvisation techniques, monologue, and scene work.  Students use scripts and improvisation to develop character, understand conflict, and write plays.

 DRAMA 2

Prerequisite:  Drama 1

Students perform historical dramas and monologues from ancient Greece to the present to learn about great drama in context.  Authors include Sophocles, Shakespeare, Moliere, Ibsen, Williams, Beckett, Pinter, and Albee.

 DRAMA 3

Prerequisite: Juniors and seniors only by audition.

This is a performance-based course. Student’s research, perform, and create monologues, plays and scenes for large audiences.  Rehearsals take place in class and after school. Aspects of directing and technical theatre will be applied.

 DRAMA PRODUCTION          

Students design and run the lights, sound, stage/set, props and costume construction for the school plays and musicals.  Students create their own shows using sets, sound, lighting and elements of dance, movement, voice and acting.  Students must be willing to do construction and attend rehearsals.

DRAMA for FILM

This is a performance-based course.  Students will learn the intricacies of acting for the camera versus live performance on the stage.  This course includes instruction on sketch comedy and melodrama, as well as camera usage.  Students will use improvisation as well as scripts to develop character and understand how to demonstrate conflict on the intimate small screen.

MUSICAL THEATRE

This is a performance-based course.  This course will cover all areas of musical theatre performance and students will study and learn to perform vocals, movement and dance, as well as characterization and script memorization from modern and classic musicals.

Instrumental Music Courses

WIND ENSEMBLE

Prerequisite: Audition Required. Students are concurrently enrolled in Marching Band.  Attendance is mandatory at after school rehearsals.

This class is designed as a highly advanced performance ensemble and is for serious student musicians.  All students participate in marching band, concerts, competitions, tours, and special music events throughout the school year.

SYMPHONIC BAND

Prerequisite: Prior knowledge experience on a brass or woodwind instrument is required but not necessary.  Director’s approval for new students is required.  Students are concurrently enrolled in Marching Band.  Attendance is mandatory at after school rehearsals.

This class covers standard band literature and multicultural music.  Students study basic theory and are expected to learn scales and rhythm patterns.  All students participate in marching band, concerts, competitions, and special music events throughout the school year.

JAZZ BAND

Prerequisite: Director’s Approval and Audition Required.  Students must enroll in a concert band class in addition to Jazz Band.

Students will learn all aspects of jazz music in a standard Big Band setting.  Students are expected to know the blues scales and learn improvisation and jazz theory.  All students participate in concerts, competitions, jazz festivals, community and school events, and special music activities throughout the school year.

MARCHING BAND

Prerequisite: All students enrolled in Marching Band must enroll in Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, or Auxiliary Dance.  Attendance is mandatory at after school rehearsals.

This course is designed for 9-12th graders. Experience on a brass, woodwind, percussion, or color guard instrument is encouraged but not necessary.  Students learn marching fundamentals and techniques and participate in football games, rallies, pep band, community events, and outside competitions.

AUXILIARY DANCE/PERCUSSION

Prerequisite:  Director’s Approval.  Prior dance and color guard experience is recommended but not required.  Percussion experience is recommended but not required.  Students are concurrently enrolled in Marching Band. Attendance is mandatory at after school rehearsals.

Students learn group routines and perform with the marching band using flags and other equipment.  Movement to music, choreography, elements of PE such as flexibility, coordination and upper body-strength development, fitness and exercise are all part of the class.  This course fulfills the one-year fine arts/ foreign language graduation requirement.

Percussion students will learn all aspects of playing percussion through technique based instruction.  They will also function as the percussion section for the Symphonic Band.

Visual Art Courses

ART 1

Are you interested in learning how to draw, paint, and create art? An entire year of creative expression through art, this class offers a variety of materials and opportunities to try new techniques. Art 1 focuses on the elements and principles of design, and is designed to make art exciting, easy to learn, and accessible to students of all skill levels!

This course is a prerequisite for Art 2 and Ceramics 1.

ART 2

Prerequisite: Art 1 or teacher approved portfolio

This class is for those students who know they possess the “creative gene!” Picking up the pencil, brush, and tools where Art 1 left off, Art 2 is the intermediate 2-dimensional class with a more in-depth journey down the creative path. Art 2 focuses on developing the ideas behind the artwork, and in learning new and exciting techniques. Sign up today!

AP STUDIO ART – 2D Design Portfolio (Advanced)

Prerequisite: Art 2 with teacher approval, OR a teacher approved portfolio.

You are an amazing artist and you know it! AP Studio 2D Design portfolio is a division of the AP Portfolio with a focus on 2D techniques such as drawing and painting. The class is dedicated to the creation of a portfolio through specific areas of study. This class is for the advanced 2-dimensional art student, and looks to challenge students by continuing to improve their 3D skills, and evolve the ideas behind their artwork. Interested students should have a love of creativity, solid design concepts, and currently be at an intermediate level of art. AP Studio 2D Design is designed as a two-year course of study; however seniors or students who can only dedicate one year are fully welcome!

SCULPTURE 1

If you like hands-on projects, have a sense of adventure, and enjoy creating art from different materials, sculpture is for you! Beginning sculpture is an introduction to 3-dimensional art, and is designed to make sculpture exciting, easy to learn, and accessible to students of all skill levels! CERAMICS 1

Prerequisite:  Art 1 or Sculpture 1

This is an introductory ceramics class that focuses on hand construction techniques. We’ll explore the basic methods of pinch forming, slab construction, and coil construction through a series of fun projects. You’ll be amazed at the imaginative creations you can produce out of clay!

CERAMICS 2

Prerequisite:  Ceramics 1 or Sculpture 1 (Sculpture 1 requires approval)

Got clay? Ceramics 2 is the advanced 3-dimensional art class, and picks up right where Ceramics 1 and Sculpture 1 left off. Students will explore more techniques and ideas through the potter’s wheel, large sculptures, and exploring more unique possibilities in function. The class emphasizes quality of design, creativity, and the ideas behind the work. This class can be taken twice. The second year of study is designed to the student’s individual needs.

AP STUDIO ART – 3D Design Portfolio (Advanced)

GRAPHIC DESIGN

Media and Design Arts Career Pathway

From concept to print, communicate your ideas visually by creating your own graphic designs! You’ll learn to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, the industry-standard software used by professional graphic designers. Projects include creating your own font, logo design, music CD graphics and many other visual communication projects.

FILM PRODUCTION (ART PRODUCTION)

Media and Design Arts Career Pathway

Students learn about film technique, pre-productions and film history. The film program helps you to develop the creative principles of narrative filmmaking, as well as the culture, discipline, and professional protocols of the business. You’ll write, shoot, direct, and edit several films in collaboration with your peers.

BROADCAST PRODUCTION  

Have you ever wanted to help create a Television Show?  In this class, students work together to produce a weekly news show called Panther T.V., viewed by the entire school.  Students rotate through different jobs such as: producer, director, tech-director, audio engineer, camera operator, teleprompter and on-screen talent, to learn all aspects of television production.  In addition, they will learn to edit scripts, news stories, opening sequences, credits and interviews.
