World Language Department

 SPANISH  1        

This course is designed for first-year beginning Spanish language students. First-year beginning Spanish language students develop early competency in the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Cultural differences are introduced. Much of the course is taught in the target language.

SPANISH  2

Prerequisite: Must earn a 75% or better in both semesters of the previous level, passing the placement test and/or final exam of semester 1 of the previous year or consent of previous instructor.

Second year language students continue to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.  Students are expected to practice and increase their proficiency in each area.  Much of the course is taught in the target language.

SPANISH  3

Prerequisite: Must earn a 75% or better in both semesters of the previous level, passing the placement test and/or final exam of semester 1 of the previous year or consent of previous instructor.

Third year language students can expect a rigorous class in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students are expected to practice and increase their proficiency in each area.  Most of the course is taught in the target language.

SPANISH  3 HONORS

Prerequisite: Must earn a 95% or better in both semesters of the previous level or consent of previous instructor; high motivation.

Honors students are expected to listen, speak, read, and write at a very high level.  They must have a talent and a passion for the language.  Independent and group work is required and students must speak in the target language every day.

SPANISH  4 HONORS

Prerequisite: Must earn a 95% or better in both semester of the previous level or consent of previous instructor; high motivation.

In Spanish 4 students will deepen their understanding of the Spanish language and receive an introduction to the literature of the Spanish-speaking world.  Along with discussing and writing about literary selections, students will be presented with a variety of cultural topics in the target language through which they will learn more about the history, social customs, and regional vocabulary of the different Spanish-speaking countries. Lessons dedicated to grammar, spelling and vocabulary are designed to refine the students’ prior knowledge and explore the unique and subtle aspects of the Spanish language.

AP SPANISH LANGUAGE  - not going to be offered for 2015-2016

Prerequisite: Level 3 or 4 teacher recommendation. Students must have a strong desire to succeed and a passion for Spanish.

This course is the equivalent of a third-year college course in Spanish listening, speaking, reading and writing.  There are daily assignments and students must be highly organized and motivated daily to succeed.  Students are prepared to take the Spanish AP Language exam in May. Successful completion of summer unit is required

AP FRENCH 

Prerequisite:  Must earn a 75% or better in both semesters of the previous level, passing the placement test and/or final exam of semester 1 of the previous year or consent of previous instructor.

The Advanced Placement French course is the fourth in the series of French classes offered.  Students will continue their advancement in listening comprehension, speaking, cultural analysis, reading and writing in French.  The course meets the standards set by the College Board to prepare students for the end of year exam.
